He met a Dutch traveller who had extra equipment to make the hike to Machu Picchu. Accepting the Dutch traveller's invitation to join him on the hike, they disembarked the train at stopping point, KM 88 where they would pick up the trail. The trail winds through cloudforests where it rained almost continuously. The Dutch traveller had a tent so sleeping in the rain was possible. There were other ruins on the way to Machu Picchu. One night was spent on one of these stone fortresses. The focus of his time in Cuzco was the trip to Machu Picchu so he somehow failed to realize the significance of Sacsayhuaman. Years later he saw pictures of the perfectly fitted stone walls and wondered how he had missed them. Noticing that they were located in the hills above Cuzco.
